Plattelandsplanning is the discipline and practice of planning and managing rural areas to improve livelihoods, sustain services, and preserve landscapes. It seeks to balance economic development with environmental protection and social well-being in places where agriculture, forestry, and small communities are central.

Practitioners work at the intersection of land use, infrastructure, housing, and services. The scope includes agricultural policy, rural transport, digital connectivity, energy systems, nature conservation, cultural heritage, tourism, and rural housing. Planning processes emphasize integration across sectors, stakeholder participation, and coordination with regional and national plans.

Methods and tools commonly used include participatory planning, scenario planning, GIS-based land suitability analysis, zoning and design guidelines, and the use of rural development programs such as EU LEADER or national rural funds. Governance typically involves municipalities, regional authorities, and local action groups, with involvement of residents, farmers, businesses, and NGOs.

Challenges facing plattelandsplanning include population decline and aging, declining services, limited funding, governance fragmentation, and climate change. Opportunities lie in landscape-based tourism, sustainable agriculture, renewable energy, nature-based solutions, and improved digital infrastructure.
