Platingtechnieken refer to the industrial and laboratory processes used to deposit a thin layer of material onto the surface of a substrate. The primary goal is to enhance properties such as corrosion resistance, wear resistance, electrical conductivity, or aesthetic appearance. Typical substrates include metals, ceramics, polymers and composites, while the plating material can be a metal (e.g., nickel, copper, gold, tin), a non‑metallic film (e.g., titanium nitride), or functional coatings such as conductive polymers.

The most common plating methods are electroplating, electroless plating, chemical vapour deposition, physical vapour deposition, sputtering, and plasma‑enhanced chemical vapour deposition. Electroplating uses an electric current to reduce metal ions from a solution onto a conductive substrate. Electroless plating, in contrast, relies on a chemical reaction that deposits metal without external electricity, allowing for uniform coatings on non‑conductive surfaces. Chemical vapour deposition (CVD) and physical vapour deposition (PVD) involve the deposition of material from a gas phase, often at elevated temperatures, and are widely used for high‑performance coatings such as diamond‑like carbon and titanium nitride. Sputtering, a PVD variant, ejects atoms from a target material using ion bombardment and deposits them onto the substrate.

Applications of platingtechnieken span electronics, automotive parts, aerospace, medical devices, and decorative finishes. Advantages include improved surface durability, reduced friction, corrosion protection and tailored electrical properties. Challenges involve process complexity, cost, and environmental concerns related to hazardous chemicals and waste. The development of greener plating processes, such as low‑melting‑point alloys and aqueous chemistries, is an active area of research aimed at mitigating these issues.
