Plasmasäteilytiede, often translated as plasma radiation science or plasma emission science, is a field of physics that studies the electromagnetic radiation emitted by plasmas. Plasmas are ionized gases, meaning they contain a significant number of free electrons and ions. These charged particles interact with each other and with electromagnetic fields, leading to the emission of radiation across a wide spectrum, from radio waves to gamma rays.

The study of plasma radiation is crucial for understanding a variety of natural and artificial phenomena. In astrophysics, it is used to investigate the conditions within stars, nebulae, and accretion disks around black holes. For example, the light from stars is a direct result of plasma processes. In laboratory settings, understanding plasma radiation is essential for the development of fusion energy reactors, plasma processing technologies, and for the design of sensors and diagnostics.

Different mechanisms contribute to plasma radiation. Bremsstrahlung, or braking radiation, occurs when charged particles are decelerated as they interact with other charged particles. Synchrotron radiation is produced when charged particles are accelerated by magnetic fields. Recombination radiation arises when electrons recombine with ions. Line emission, from the excitation and de-excitation of atomic and ionic energy levels, is also a significant component. Analyzing the intensity, spectrum, and polarization of this emitted radiation allows scientists to determine plasma properties such as temperature, density, magnetic field strength, and composition.
