Plasmaproteinhalten refers to the concentration of proteins within blood plasma. Blood plasma is the liquid component of blood in which the blood cells are suspended, and it constitutes about 55% of the total blood volume. These proteins are synthesized primarily in the liver, though some are produced by immune cells. The total concentration of plasma proteins in healthy adults typically ranges from 60 to 80 grams per liter.

A significant portion of plasma proteins are albumin, which plays a crucial role in maintaining osmotic pressure, preventing fluid from leaking out of the blood vessels into tissues. Other important plasma proteins include globulins and fibrinogen. Globulins are a diverse group that includes antibodies (immunoglobulins) involved in the immune response, and transport proteins that carry hormones, lipids, and metal ions. Fibrinogen is essential for blood clotting, converting into fibrin to form a mesh that stops bleeding.

Measuring plasmaproteinhalten is a common diagnostic tool. Deviations from the normal range can indicate various medical conditions. For instance, low plasma protein levels (hypoproteinemia) can be a sign of liver disease, kidney disease, malnutrition, or severe burns. Conversely, elevated levels (hyperproteinemia) might suggest dehydration, certain inflammatory conditions, or multiple myeloma. Specific protein levels can also be analyzed to provide more detailed diagnostic information.
