Plasmahyytymistekijät, or plasma clotting factors, are a group of proteins found in blood plasma that are essential for the process of hemostasis, which is the cessation of bleeding. When a blood vessel is injured, these factors are activated in a complex cascade, ultimately leading to the formation of a fibrin clot that seals the damaged site and stops blood loss. There are numerous clotting factors, often identified by Roman numerals, such as Factor VIII and Factor IX. Deficiencies or abnormalities in these factors can lead to bleeding disorders like hemophilia. Conversely, an overactivity or imbalance in the clotting system can result in unwanted clot formation, contributing to conditions like thrombosis. The production of most clotting factors is primarily regulated by the liver, and their levels can be influenced by various factors including vitamin K.
