Planktonderived

Plankton-derived is a term used to describe substances, materials, or products that originate from plankton—the diverse community of microscopic organisms that drift in aquatic environments. The term typically includes components derived from both phytoplankton (photosynthetic organisms such as microalgae) and zooplankton (non-photosynthetic animals that feed on other plankton).

Common plankton-derived substances include oils and fatty acids such as EPA and DHA produced by microalgae, carotenoid pigments such as astaxanthin, and various polysaccharides and proteins with bioactive properties. Many of these compounds are obtained by cultivating microalgae in controlled systems and processing the biomass to isolate the target ingredients. Some products are derived from naturally harvested plankton or from byproducts of fisheries, while others rely on fermentation or biotechnological production methods.

Applications span nutraceuticals, cosmetics, animal feeds, and pharmaceuticals. Algae-based omega-3 oils provide alternatives to fish oil; astaxanthin and other plankton-derived antioxidants are used in dietary supplements and skin-care products; and certain plankton-derived polysaccharides serve as texture enhancers or stabilizers in foods and cosmetics. In research contexts, planktonic bioactives are explored for anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, or anticancer properties.

Sustainability and regulation are important considerations. Microalgae cultivation can use light and CO2, potentially reducing land and freshwater use, but production systems vary in energy inputs and emissions. Market terminology is not standardized in all regions, so product claims should specify source, processing, and quality assurances.
