Planetat

Planetat is a term used in speculative planetary science and science fiction to denote a small, planet-like body that lies at the boundary between an asteroid and a full-fledged planet. It is not an official term in current astronomical nomenclature, but appears in discussions and fictional contexts as a convenient label for borderline worlds within exoplanet catalogs or early Solar System studies.

In proposed definitions, a planetat is typically rock- or ice-dominated, large enough to become roughly spherical by its own gravity, but has not necessarily cleared its orbital neighborhood of other debris. Some uses emphasize a primary orbit around a star, while others permit categorization as a moon of a larger planet. Atmospheres, surface conditions, and geologic activity are highly variable, reflecting the diversity seen among small planetary bodies.

Because the distinctions among asteroid, dwarf planet, planet, and exoplanet are themselves debated, the status of a planetat is ambiguous. In formal classification schemes, bodies that might be labeled planetats in casual discourse are often described as dwarf planets or as small exoplanets depending on the context.

In fiction and speculative works, planetats commonly appear as settings to explore planetary formation on the edge of planet-size scales, the emergence of atmospheres, or the difficulties of distinguishing planets from large asteroids in crowded star systems.
