Forms include verbatim copying without quotation or citation, close paraphrasing that reproduces distinctive ideas without adequate attribution, mosaic or patchwork plagiarism that blends sources without proper acknowledgment, and self-plagiarism, reusing one’s own previously published material as new work. Attribution standards vary by field and jurisdiction, but most institutions require clear citation and quotation for borrowed content.

Detection often relies on plagiarism-detection software, editorial checks, and peer review. Consequences range from academic penalties (such as revisions, grade penalties, or suspensions) to professional discipline or legal action in cases involving copyrighted material. Some jurisdictions distinguish between copyright infringement and ethical breaches; not all plagiarism constitutes copyright violation, but both can carry consequences.
