Pitkäaikaissäilyminen refers to the process of preserving biological materials, such as cells, tissues, or microorganisms, for extended periods of time. The primary goal is to maintain their viability and functional integrity so they can be used later for research, diagnostics, or therapeutic purposes. Various methods are employed, with the most common being cryopreservation and lyophilization.

Cryopreservation involves storing biological samples at extremely low temperatures, typically using liquid nitrogen at -196°C. This process halts metabolic activity and slows down degradation. Cryoprotective agents are often used to prevent ice crystal formation, which can damage cells. Lyophilization, also known as freeze-drying, involves freezing the sample and then removing the water content by sublimation under vacuum. This results in a dry, stable product that can be stored at room temperature for a considerable time.

The choice of preservation method depends on the specific type of biological material and its intended use. For instance, sperm, eggs, and embryos are commonly cryopreserved for fertility treatments and research. Cell lines used in drug discovery and development are also often stored long-term via cryopreservation. Microorganisms, such as bacteria and fungi, can be preserved using both cryopreservation and lyophilization, allowing for the maintenance of microbial collections for scientific study and industrial applications.
