Piramideoverviews is a visualization concept used to summarize hierarchical data in a pyramid-shaped, multi-level diagram. The name signals a fusion of pyramid geometry with an at-a-glance overview of a dataset. In a piramideoverview, the apex represents the top-level category, and subsequent levels reveal deeper subcategories as the pyramid widens.

Construction and interpretation: The diagram is built from layers corresponding to levels of the hierarchy. Each layer is partitioned into segments for the categories at that level. The size, angle, or area of a segment encodes a quantitative measure, such as totals or averages, while color or texture can encode another attribute. Subsegments nest under their parent segments as you move down the pyramid. The result is a compact, hierarchical summary that supports quick visual comparison across categories and levels.

Applications: Piramideoverviews are used in business analytics to compare market segments, in demographics to show population structure, or in project management to illustrate task breakdowns. They are especially helpful for quick overviews of dominant categories and for identifying relative contributions within a hierarchy.

Design considerations and limitations: The chart can become difficult to read with many categories or deeply imbalanced hierarchies.
