Pinnoitusmetallit, commonly known as solder metals, are alloys used primarily to join metal components through a process called soldering. These alloys melt at relatively low temperatures compared to the materials being joined, creating a strong, conductive, and corrosion-resistant bond once cooled and solidified. Solder metals are essential in electronics, plumbing, and metalworking industries.

The most prevalent solder alloys are composed of tin and lead, with the traditional mixture being approximately 60% tin and 40% lead. However, due to health and environmental concerns associated with lead, alternative lead-free solders have gained popularity. Lead-free variants typically contain a combination of tin with other metals such as silver, copper, or bismuth. For example, tin-silver-copper (Sn-Ag-Cu) alloys are widely used in electronics for their reliability and eco-friendliness.

Properties critical to solder metals include a low melting point, good wettability, and mechanical strength. These features ensure strong electrical connections and durable joints. The melting temperature of solder alloys varies depending on composition, ranging from around 183°C for lead-based solders to over 217°C for some lead-free alloys.

The choice of solder metal depends on the application, environmental regulations, and compatibility with base materials.
