Piet

Piet is a Dutch masculine given name derived from Petrus (Peter). It is common in the Netherlands and Belgium and is used both as a stand-alone given name and as a nickname for Petrus.

Piet Mondrian (1872–1944) was a Dutch painter and a leading figure in the De Stijl movement. Born Pieter Cornelis Mondriaan, he simplified his surname to Mondrian in 1919. Mondrian’s mature work reduced visual language to a grid of vertical and horizontal lines and rectangular fields of color, typically using primary colors along with black, white, and gray, and became a defining influence on abstract art.

Piet is also the name of an esoteric programming language created by David Morgan-Mar in 1998. Programs in Piet are bitmap images; execution proceeds by moving a pointer through edge-connected color regions, with commands encoded by changes in hue and brightness between regions. Each region, or codel, contributes to the sequence of operations. The language is named after Piet Mondrian, reflecting its emphasis on visual, art-like code and its status as a niche, recreational programming language within esolang communities.
