Pierwiastków is a Polish word that translates to "elements" in English, typically referring to chemical elements. In the context of chemistry, a chemical element is a pure substance consisting only of atoms that all have the same number of protons in their atomic nuclei. This number is known as the atomic number, denoted by Z. For example, all atoms with six protons are atoms of the element carbon, and thus they belong to the chemical element carbon. Chemical elements are the basic building blocks of matter.

The concept of chemical elements has evolved over time. Ancient philosophers proposed that matter was composed of a few fundamental substances, such as earth, air, fire, and water. However, the modern understanding of elements began to take shape in the 17th and 18th centuries with the work of scientists like Robert Boyle and Antoine Lavoisier. Lavoisier is often credited with providing the first modern list of chemical elements. The periodic table, developed by Dmitri Mendeleev in the 19th century, organizes the known elements based on their atomic number, electron configuration, and recurring chemical properties.

Currently, 118 elements have been identified. These elements are found naturally on Earth and in the universe, while others have been synthesized in laboratories. Each element has unique physical and chemical properties that determine how it interacts with other elements and how it behaves in different conditions. These properties are essential for understanding the composition and behavior of all matter in the universe.
