Pierian

Pierian is an adjective and demonym relating to Pieria, an ancient region in Macedonia, Greece. In classical and modern usage it can describe the people of Pieria (Pierians) or things associated with the region, its geography, culture, and history. The name is traditionally traced to Pierus, a legendary figure in Greek myth, though the exact origin is debated.

In antiquity, Pieria was celebrated as the homeland of the Muses, and the term Pierian often carries connotations of poetry and inspiration. The Pierian Spring, a mythical fountain said to lie in the Pierian mountains, is a familiar symbol of poetic inspiration and creative initiation in Greek and later literature. Geographically, Pieria occupied the northern Aegean coast of the ancient Macedonian kingdom, adjoining Thessaly and Macedonia proper. In modern Greece, Pieria is a regional unit within Central Macedonia, with the city of Katerini as its capital. The landscape includes coastal plains and the Pierian Mountains, near portions of Mount Olympus.
