Piekhelderheden, a Dutch term, translates to "peak brightness" or "peak luminance." It refers to the highest level of light intensity a display screen can produce. This metric is crucial for evaluating the visual quality of displays, particularly in scenarios where bright areas are important for image fidelity and dynamic range.

Higher piekhelderheden are essential for accurately rendering HDR (High Dynamic Range) content. HDR allows for a wider contrast ratio between the brightest highlights and the darkest shadows in an image, resulting in a more realistic and lifelike visual experience. Displays with greater piekhelderheden can reproduce the intense specular highlights found in scenes like sunlight glinting off water or the bright lights of a cityscape.

The measurement of piekhelderheden is typically done in nits (or candelas per square meter). Different display technologies and manufacturers will advertise varying piekhelderheden. For example, some premium OLED and QLED televisions boast peak brightness levels that far exceed those of standard LCD displays.

While high piekhelderheden are generally desirable, they are not the sole determinant of display quality. Factors like contrast ratio, color accuracy, and uniformity also play significant roles. However, for content where bright highlights are a key visual element, a display's piekhelderheden will directly impact how effectively those highlights are presented.
