Photogated

Photogated is a term used to describe a phenomenon or device where the output or operation is controlled by incident light in a specific, often gated, manner. This gating implies that the light's effect is not simply proportional to its intensity but rather triggers a distinct change in state or behavior, often at a threshold level.

In the context of electronics and sensors, photogating can refer to a device whose conductivity or switching characteristics are modulated by light. For example, a photogated transistor might remain in an off-state until a certain light intensity is reached, at which point it rapidly turns on. Conversely, it could be designed to switch off when illuminated. The "gated" aspect suggests that the light acts like a control signal, opening or closing a pathway for current or a specific function.

The principle behind photogating often involves internal gain mechanisms. When photons strike the photosensitive material, they generate charge carriers. In a photogated device, these carriers can trigger a secondary process that amplifies the initial photocurrent.
