Photoactuators

Photoactuators are devices that convert light energy into mechanical motion or force. They operate on the principle of the photochemical or photophysical response of specific materials to illumination. When light, typically in the visible or ultraviolet spectrum, strikes a photoactuator material, it induces a change in its physical properties, leading to an actuating effect. This effect can manifest as a change in shape, volume, or stiffness of the material.

The mechanism behind photoactuation varies depending on the material used. Some photoactuators rely on photochemical reactions, where light triggers a chemical transformation that results in a macroscopic movement. Others utilize photophysical phenomena like the photothermal effect, where light absorption leads to localized heating and subsequent thermal expansion or contraction. Photoisomerization is another common mechanism, where light causes molecules to switch between different structural forms, leading to a change in the material's overall dimensions.

Photoactuators offer several advantages, including remote operation, biocompatibility for certain materials, and the potential for high spatial and temporal resolution. Their applications are diverse and are being explored in fields such as micro-robotics, soft robotics, artificial muscles, drug delivery systems, and adaptive optics.
