Phosphorosaurus

Phosphorosaurus is a genus of extinct marine reptile belonging to the mosasaur family. It lived during the Late Cretaceous period, approximately 80 to 70 million years ago. The name Phosphorosaurus means "light-bearing lizard," referring to its bioluminescent capabilities, though direct evidence of bioluminescence is inferred rather than preserved. Fossils of Phosphorosaurus have been found primarily in Europe, notably in Belgium and the Netherlands.

This genus is characterized by its relatively small to medium size compared to other mosasaurs, with estimates suggesting lengths of around 3 to 5 meters. Key distinguishing features include a distinctively shaped skull with a flattened snout and large orbits, indicating potentially good vision. The teeth were sharp and adapted for predation. Phosphorosaurus likely inhabited shallow marine environments and fed on fish, cephalopods, and possibly smaller marine vertebrates. Its precise ecological role within the Late Cretaceous marine ecosystem is still a subject of scientific study. Phosphorosaurus is considered a basal member of the Mosasauridae family, providing insights into the early evolution and diversification of these dominant marine predators.
