PhosphatEinheiten
PhosphatEinheiten, often abbreviated PE, is a non-SI unit used to express phosphate content or activity in chemical, biochemical, and environmental contexts. The term does not refer to a single globally standardized measure; instead, field-specific conventions define what one PhosphatEinheit represents. In many implementations, one PE corresponds to 1 micromole of inorganic phosphate (PO4^3−) released or consumed in a reaction, per sample. Because definitions can vary, some laboratories report PO4^3− or PO4-P values and then convert to PE only when a local standard is established.
Measurement and reporting of PhosphatEinheiten rely on the underlying phosphate quantification method. Typical methods include colorimetric
Applications and limitations: The unit has seen use in some German-speaking laboratories and in niche industrial
