Phorophytes

Phorophytes are organisms that serve as hosts for other organisms, specifically epiphytes. An epiphyte is a plant that grows on another plant, deriving its moisture and nutrients from the air, rain, and sometimes from debris accumulating around it. Phorophytes themselves are not harmed by the epiphytes; the relationship is commensal, meaning one organism benefits and the other is unaffected.

Trees are common phorophytes, particularly in humid environments like rainforests. In these ecosystems, the bark and branches of trees provide a stable surface for mosses, ferns, orchids, and bromeliads to grow. Other examples of phorophytes can include shrubs, rocks, and even man-made structures like fences or buildings, though the term is most frequently associated with living plants.

The success of an epiphyte is often dependent on the characteristics of its phorophyte. Factors such as the phorophyte's age, bark texture, canopy structure, and light availability can all influence which species of epiphytes can establish and thrive. The presence of certain phorophytes can therefore create unique microhabitats, supporting a diverse community of epiphytic life. This intricate relationship is a significant aspect of biodiversity in many terrestrial ecosystems.
