Phoneticized refers to the process of representing spoken language using a system of symbols that correspond to individual sounds, known as phonemes. This is distinct from conventional spelling, which can be irregular and not always indicative of pronunciation. For instance, the English word "knight" is spelled with letters that represent sounds like /n/ and /t/, but the "k" and "gh" are silent. A phoneticized version, using a system like the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA), would represent the pronunciation as /naɪt/, directly showing the sounds the word makes when spoken.

The primary purpose of phoneticization is to provide a standardized and unambiguous way to transcribe pronunciation. This is crucial in fields such as linguistics, language learning, lexicography (dictionary making), and speech therapy. Dictionaries often include phonetic transcriptions alongside word definitions to aid users in correct pronunciation. Language learners can benefit immensely from phonetic transcriptions as they help overcome the challenges of inconsistent spelling-to-sound rules in many languages. Speech therapists use phonetic notation to analyze and correct pronunciation difficulties.
