Phin

Phin is a term that can refer to more than one thing, depending on context. In Vietnamese coffee culture, a phin is a traditional metal drip-filter device used to brew coffee. The device typically consists of a small perforated cylinder or basket with a lid that sits atop a cup or glass. Ground coffee is placed inside the phin, hot water is poured over it, and the brew drips slowly through the perforations to produce a strong, full-bodied coffee. The phin method is commonly used to prepare ca phe sua da, a Vietnamese iced coffee with sweetened condensed milk. The process emphasizes a longer extraction time and a distinctive, layered texture compared with other drip methods, and it remains a recognizable feature of Vietnamese cafés.

Phin is also a personal name in Vietnamese-speaking communities. It can function as a given name or a surname, and may appear in various romanizations. Outside Vietnam, the term phin is sometimes encountered in coffee-related writing or as part of brand names that reference the device.

In other contexts, Phin may appear as part of place names, acronyms, or fictional character names in various languages, though such uses are less common.
