It traces its origins to 1891 in Eindhoven, founded by Gerard Philips and his brother Anton Philips as a manufacturer of carbon-filament lamps. The Philips surname is retained in the company name, reflecting its family origins. Over the 20th century the group expanded into consumer electronics, home appliances, and medical technologies, becoming a diversified global technology company.

In recent decades Philips reoriented toward health technology and connected care solutions. Its former lighting business was spun off as Signify in 2016, while its semiconductor activities were separated earlier with the creation of NXP Semiconductors in 2006. Today Philips concentrates on health technology, including medical devices, diagnostic imaging, patient monitoring, and related services, alongside consumer health products that carry the Philips name.
