Philidor
François-André Danican Philidor (1726–1795) was a French composer and chess player who became one of the leading figures of 18th-century chess. Born into a family of musicians, he pursued a parallel career as a composer and court musician while also cultivating chess as a serious pursuit. He spent much of his life touring Europe as a performer and competed against many of the era’s strongest players.
