PhaseGateModell

The PhaseGateModel is a conceptual framework used in project management and product development to guide projects through distinct stages. It aims to ensure that projects are properly evaluated, resourced, and executed, thereby reducing the risk of failure and increasing the likelihood of success. The model divides a project's lifecycle into a series of sequential phases, often referred to as "gates" or "decision points."

At the end of each phase, a gate is established. Before a project can proceed to the next phase, it must pass through this gate. Passing through a gate signifies that the project has met specific predefined criteria, objectives, and deliverables for the preceding phase. These criteria are typically evaluated by a decision-making body or management team.

The typical phases in a PhaseGateModel include concept, feasibility, development, testing, launch, and post-launch. At each gate, key questions are addressed, such as whether the project is still strategically aligned, if the business case remains valid, if technical challenges are manageable, and if adequate resources are available. If a project fails to pass a gate, it may be stopped, sent back to a previous phase for rework, or significantly altered. This structured approach provides control and visibility throughout the project lifecycle.
