They include major lineages such as diatoms (Bacillariophyta), golden algae (Chrysophyceae), and yellow-green algae (Xanthophyta), among others. Phylogenetic studies often place these groups as part of a broader clade that includes Phaeophyceae, though exact relationships vary with data.

Characteristics: Members are predominantly aquatic, mainly marine, with varied life cycles. They typically possess chloroplasts containing chlorophylls a and c and the accessory pigment fucoxanthin, giving brown to olive coloration. They store energy as laminarin or chrysolaminarin and have cell walls based on cellulose, sometimes with silica in diatoms.
