Pflegeverhältnis is a German term that translates to "care relationship" or "custodial relationship." It refers to the legal and social bond established when a person, typically a child, is placed under the care and supervision of another individual or entity. This arrangement is often a response to situations where the biological parents are unable or unwilling to provide adequate care.

Pflegeverhältnisse can arise in various contexts. The most common form is Pflegefamilie, or foster family, where a child lives with a foster family. This can be temporary or long-term, depending on the child's needs and the goals of the placement. Another type is Versorgungspflege, which involves care provided by relatives, often grandparents, who take on parental responsibilities. Additionally, Pflegeverhältnisse can be established in residential care settings, such as children's homes, though the term more strongly implies a familial or quasi-familial structure.

The primary purpose of a Pflegeverhältnis is to ensure the well-being and development of the individual receiving care. Legal frameworks in Germany govern these relationships, outlining the rights and responsibilities of all parties involved, including the caregivers, the individual in care, and often the Jugendamt (Youth Welfare Office). The Jugendamt plays a crucial role in assessing suitability of caregivers, facilitating placements, and monitoring the quality of care provided. The aim is always to provide a stable, nurturing environment that meets the physical, emotional, and educational needs of the person in care.
