Petroleum-derived substances are chemical compounds produced from crude oil or associated natural gas liquids through refining and processing. They encompass fuels, solvents, plastics, lubricants, and a range of specialty chemicals used across industries.

Most petroleum-derived products originate from crude oil and are separated into fractions by distillation. Further processing, such as catalytic cracking, reforming, alkylation, and coking, converts heavier fractions into base petrochemicals like ethylene, propylene, benzene, toluene, and xylene, which serve as building blocks for plastics and chemicals.

Common petroleum-derived materials include fuels such as gasoline and diesel; polymers such as polyethylene, polypropylene, and polyvinyl chloride; synthetic rubbers; solvents and additives; lubricants; and detergents. Some polymers are produced by polymerizing light hydrocarbons, while others derive from aromatics and other petrochemical feedstocks.

Environmental considerations include fossil carbon emissions from extraction, refining, and end use, as well as risks of spills and waste. Plastics derived from petroleum pose end-of-life challenges, including recycling limitations and microplastic release. Regulation typically requires hazard communication and emissions controls.

In energy and materials policy, petroleum-derived products are often discussed alongside renewable or bio-based alternatives. Markets and policy trends emphasize circular economy approaches, recycling, energy recovery, and the development of substitutes to reduce dependence on fossil inputs.
