Pessinus
Pessinus, or Pessinous in Greek, was an ancient city in western Anatolia, situated in the region known in antiquity as Phrygia (with later associations to Mysia). It is best known as the traditional sanctuary of Cybele, the Great Mother, and her consort Attis. The city housed a prominent temple complex and a cult center whose rites attracted pilgrims from across the Greek world and Anatolia. The Cybele cult at Pessinus was prominent from the late archaic period through the Hellenistic era, supported by Phrygian and Greek-speaking communities, and it produced a distinctive priesthood later noted in historical sources as the Galli.
