Perustuksiksi is a Finnish term referring to the foundations of a building or structure. These are the elements that transfer the loads from the building to the ground. Proper foundations are crucial for the stability, safety, and longevity of any construction project.

There are various types of foundations, broadly categorized as shallow and deep. Shallow foundations are typically used when the soil near the surface has sufficient bearing capacity to support the structure. Examples include strip foundations, pad foundations, and raft foundations. Strip foundations are continuous strips of concrete that support load-bearing walls. Pad foundations are individual concrete bases supporting columns. Raft foundations, also known as mat foundations, are large slabs of concrete that cover the entire footprint of the building, distributing the load over a wide area.

Deep foundations are employed when the upper soil layers are weak or unstable, and the load needs to be transferred to a stronger stratum deeper underground. Common types of deep foundations include piles and caissons. Piles are long, slender elements driven or bored into the ground. Caissons are large, watertight structures that are sunk into the ground to provide a foundation for structures, often used in underwater construction.

The design and selection of the appropriate foundation type depend on several factors, including the type of structure, the expected loads, and the geological and hydrological conditions of the site. Geotechnical investigations are essential to determine the soil properties and ensure the foundation is adequate. Inadequate or poorly constructed foundations can lead to settlement, structural damage, and, in severe cases, complete failure of the building. Therefore, careful planning, design, and execution of foundation work are paramount in construction.
