Perusteellisuutena

Perusteellisuutena is a Finnish noun form used to express “as thoroughness” or “in the capacity of thoroughness.” It is derived from the adjective perusteellinen (thorough) and the noun perusteellisuus (thoroughness), with the suffix -na/-nä giving the sense of “in the role of” or “as.” The expression is relatively uncommon and is mainly found in formal or rhetorical Finnish, such as academic writing or critical discourse, where the writer wants to foreground thoroughness as a criterion or quality attributed to something.

In usage, speakers more often employ perusteellisuus to refer to the quality itself or use adverbs like perusteellisesti to describe how something is done. The -na/-nä form functions as a nominalized marker that designates a perspective, criterion, or function—“as thoroughness”—rather than serving as a straightforward predicate.

Usage notes: Because it is formal and somewhat technical, perusteellisuutena can sound artificial in everyday speech. When clarity is preferred, alternatives such as perusteellisesti (thoroughly) or perusteellisuus (thoroughness) are typically more natural.
