Peruskehikko

Peruskehikko, literally “basic frame” in Finnish, refers to the primary skeleton or load-bearing framework used in construction as well as in the design of machinery and equipment. It defines the overall geometry of a structure and provides the support to which floors, walls, and outer cladding are attached. A peruskehikko is typically composed of uprights (columns), horizontal members (beams or girts), and bracing. Materials vary with application and can include timber or engineered wood products, steel, or aluminum.

In building construction, the peruskehikko is erected early in the project and rests on a permanent foundation. It transfers loads to the foundation and forms the basis for subsequent enclosure, insulation, and finishing work. In residential and modular construction, timber-based peruskehikko is common, while large commercial projects may use steel frames. In modular or prefabricated construction, the base frame can be produced off-site and assembled on-site.

In machinery and industrial installations, a peruskehikko (base frame) provides mounting points for components, supports equipment weight, and helps locate tools and working clearances. Vibration isolation and leveling feet are typical features.

Important design considerations include load paths, member sizing, connections, stiffness, and durability against corrosion or fatigue. The peruskehikko is not a foundation itself, but it relies on a properly designed foundation and anchors to ensure overall stability.
