Peroxiderelated

Peroxiderelated is an adjective used to describe phenomena, compounds, or processes that involve peroxides or peroxide-driven chemistry. It commonly refers to reactions involving O-O bonds such as hydrogen peroxide, organic hydroperoxides, and peroxides used as oxidants, as well as secondary products formed by peroxide reactions, including lipid hydroperoxides and other oxidation products.

In chemistry, peroxiderelated reactions include radical initiation by homolysis of O-O bonds, oxidation of substrates by peroxides, and decomposition of peroxides to reactive radicals. Examples include hydrogen peroxide–mediated oxidations, peracid-catalyzed epoxidations, and the Fenton reaction generating hydroxyl radicals from hydrogen peroxide.

In biology and medicine, peroxiderelated processes are central to oxidative stress, signaling, and damage. H2O2 acts as a reactive oxygen species at low levels in signaling, but excessive levels contribute to lipid, protein, and DNA oxidation. Lipid peroxidation yields reactive aldehydes such as malondialdehyde and 4-hydroxynonenal, affecting membranes and enzymes. Antioxidant systems, including catalase, peroxidases, and glutathione, limit peroxiderelated damage.

In environmental science and industry, peroxides are used as disinfectants and initiators for polymerization; atmospheric chemistry involves peroxide formation via photochemical reactions, influencing radical cycles and air quality.
