Permutaatiotmäärä is a Finnish term that translates to "number of permutations" in English. It refers to the total count of possible arrangements of a set of distinct objects. When dealing with a set of n distinct objects, the number of permutations is calculated as n factorial, denoted as n!. This means multiplying all positive integers from 1 up to n. For example, if there are 3 distinct objects, the number of permutations is 3! = 3 * 2 * 1 = 6.

The concept of permutations is fundamental in combinatorics and probability. It helps in determining the number of ways events can occur or the number of possible outcomes in a given scenario. Permutations are used in various fields, including computer science for algorithms, cryptography for secure arrangements, and statistics for analyzing data.

In a permutation, the order of the objects matters. This distinguishes it from combinations, where the order does not matter. For instance, if we are arranging the letters A, B, and C, the permutation ABC is different from ACB, BAC, BCA, CAB, and CBA. Each of these is a unique permutation. The formula n! is used when all objects in the set are distinct and all are included in the arrangement. If only a subset of the objects is being arranged, a different formula involving permutations of k objects chosen from n is used.
