In geotechnical engineering, the permeability value is often denoted by the symbol *k* and is measured in units of length per time, such as meters per second (m/s) or centimeters per second (cm/s). It quantifies how easily water or other fluids can flow through a soil or rock formation under a given hydraulic gradient. The value depends on factors like pore size, connectivity, and the fluid’s viscosity.

The permeability of a material is influenced by its microstructure.
