Perkolaatioalueet, or percolation areas, are specific zones within a property designed for the safe and effective treatment of wastewater from a septic system. When wastewater leaves the septic tank, it contains a significant amount of dissolved and suspended solids that require further treatment before being released into the environment. This further treatment occurs in the percolation area.

The percolation area typically consists of a network of underground trenches or beds filled with gravel or other porous media. Effluent from the septic tank flows into these trenches. The porous material acts as a filter, allowing the liquid effluent to slowly seep into the surrounding soil. As the effluent percolates through the soil, naturally occurring microorganisms break down remaining organic matter and pathogens. The soil itself acts as a natural filter, removing pollutants.

The design and size of a percolation area depend on various factors, including the soil type, the estimated volume of wastewater produced, and local regulations. Proper design and maintenance are crucial for the effective functioning of a septic system and to prevent groundwater contamination. A poorly functioning percolation area can lead to surface water pooling, foul odors, and potential health risks. Regular inspection and occasional maintenance of the septic tank and distribution system are recommended to ensure the longevity and efficiency of the percolation area.
