Perhexiline

Perhexiline is a medication used to treat angina pectoris, a condition characterized by chest pain or discomfort caused by reduced blood flow to the heart. It belongs to the class of drugs known as calcium channel blockers, which work by relaxing the blood vessels and reducing the workload on the heart. Perhexiline specifically acts on calcium channels in the heart muscle, preventing the influx of calcium ions that trigger muscle contractions.

The drug is available in tablet form and is typically taken orally. It is usually prescribed in combination with other medications, such as nitrates, to provide comprehensive management of angina. Perhexiline is generally well-tolerated, but like all medications, it can cause side effects. Common side effects include headache, dizziness, and gastrointestinal disturbances. More serious side effects are rare but can include severe allergic reactions and, in rare cases, heart failure.

Perhexiline was first introduced in the 1970s and has since been used extensively in the treatment of angina.
