Perhevapaiden

Perhevapaiden is a Finnish term referring to parental leave periods granted to parents following the birth or adoption of a child. These leaves are part of Finland's extensive parental leave system, which aims to support families in caring for their children while maintaining employment and gender equality.

In Finland, parental leave is divided into maternity leave, paternity leave, and shared parental leave. Maternity leave typically begins before the expected birth and continues after, primarily for the mother. Paternity leave is designated for fathers, allowing them to take time off around the child's birth or adoption. Shared parental leave can be allocated jointly by both parents, often to promote active fatherhood and shared caregiving responsibilities.

Parents are entitled to a total of approximately 11 months of parental leave, which can be divided or shared between them flexibly. During this period, they receive financial support in the form of parental allowances, which are paid by Kela, the Finnish social insurance institution.
