Perfuusiota

Perfuusiota is the process of perfusing biological tissue with a fluid to maintain viability, replace native blood, or deliver nutrients, gases, and medications. In clinical and research contexts, it refers to controlled circulation of fluid through the vascular network of an organ or limb.

A perfusate may be whole blood, blood substitutes, saline solutions, or specialized preservation or research fluids. Parameters commonly controlled during perfusion include flow rate, pressure, temperature, oxygenation, and the chemical composition of the solution. Techniques differ by whether perfusion is antegrade (in the natural direction of flow) or retrograde, and by temperature (normothermic or hypothermic). In isolated organ setups, perfusion may be continuous or pulsatile.

Applications include organ preservation for transplantation, cardiopulmonary bypass, and perfusion imaging or research. In organ preservation, normothermic or hypothermic perfusion with oxygenated solutions helps maintain tissue viability during transport. In experimental settings, perfusion supports tissue maintenance, drug delivery, and metabolite study. Historical milestones include the Langendorff heart perfusion technique for isolated heart studies and early vascular perfusion methods developed by Alexis Carrel.

Risks and limitations include edema, shear injury to microvasculature, hemolysis, air embolism, and challenges in maintaining uniform distribution of the perfusate. Regulatory and ethical considerations apply to clinical perfusion, especially in transplantation and experimental research.
