Perforatiediameter, more commonly written as perforation diameter, refers to the diameter of an individual hole or perforation in a material or structure. It is a primary geometric parameter used when describing perforated sheets, membranes, filters, and other porous components. When holes are uniform and circular, the perforation diameter is denoted by D and is often specified together with hole pitch, pattern, and material thickness. In patterns where holes deviate from perfect circles, the concept of an equivalent diameter may be used, defined as the diameter of a circle with the same area as the actual perforation.

Measurement and notation: The diameter is measured across the circle’s center, typically with calipers, optical inspection, or coordinate metrology. In engineering drawings and specifications, D is listed alongside other parameters such as pitch (the center-to-center distance between holes) and the number or arrangement of holes. For noncircular holes, engineers may specify the equivalent diameter or the exact hole shape and dimensions.

In filtration and separation, it governs flow, retention, and pressure drop. In acoustics, hole size affects sound transmission and absorption.
