Perceptualabstract is a neologism used in discussions of visual perception and art to denote stimuli or artworks designed to foreground perceptual processes and generate abstract experience rather than depicting recognizable objects. The term is used to signal a focus on how perception shapes meaning and form, rather than on representational content.

The term appears in late 20th-century discussions of contemporary art and cognitive science; it is not universally adopted, but is used to describe a hybrid space between abstract art traditions and studies of perceptual organization. Proponents emphasize that perceptualabstract works invite viewers to engage with the displaying of perceptual cues—color, light, texture, motion, and spatial relations—before any narrative or symbolic interpretation.

Core characteristics include nonrepresentational forms and an emphasis on perceptual cues that trigger organization, such as color contrasts, boundary ambiguity, motion, depth cues, and dependent relationships between elements. Works may be static or interactive and often encourage open-ended engagement, allowing individual differences in perception to shape meaning.

Generative patterns, optical art, and modular layouts are commonly described as perceptualabstract when they foreground processing of perceptual cues over figurative content.

Critiques note that the term can be vague or overlapping with existing concepts like abstract art or perceptual psychology. It has limited standardized use across disciplines, and its value often rests on how clearly it communicates a focus on perceptual processes rather than on depicting objects.
