Pentangle

Pentangle is a term with several meanings in art, literature, and music. In medieval symbolism and Arthurian literature, a pentangle is a five-pointed, interlaced star-like figure used as a heraldic device. It is most famously described in Sir Gawain and the Green Knight as the five-pointed figure on Sir Gawain's shield. In the poem, the pentangle is presented as a flawless and continuous form associated with the knight’s virtues and steadfastness; interpretations of its symbolism vary, including links to fidelity and to various virtues or senses.

In modern culture, Pentangle refers to an English folk-jazz band formed in London in 1967. The group, composed of guitarist-singers Bert Jansch and John Renbourn, bassist Danny Thompson, drummer Terry Cox, and vocalist Jacqui McShee, fused traditional British folk with jazz influences. Their 1968 self-titled debut and subsequent albums such as Basket of Light helped define the British folk revival of the late 1960s. They are noted for intricate guitar work, close vocal harmonies, and a continuing influence on folk-rock musicians. The band disbanded in the early 1970s and has since reformed for tours and reunions.
