Pendelprüfungen, also known as pendulum tests, are a common method for assessing the impact resistance of materials, particularly plastics and coatings. The test involves swinging a pendulum, often equipped with a specific type of hammer or tup, from a defined height onto a standardized sample of the material. The energy absorbed by the material during the impact is measured, which can be quantified by the height to which the pendulum swings back after striking the sample.

There are several standardized methods for conducting pendulum tests, with the Izod and Charpy tests being the most widely recognized. The Izod test typically involves a notched specimen supported at one end, with the pendulum striking the notch. The Charpy test, on contrast, uses a notched specimen supported at both ends, with the pendulum striking the opposite side of the notch. The choice of test method, hammer shape, and striking velocity depends on the specific material and the intended application.

The results of pendulum tests provide a measure of the material's toughness and its ability to withstand sudden, forceful impacts. This information is crucial for material selection in applications where durability and resistance to fracture are important, such as in automotive components, protective gear, and construction materials. Factors like temperature, sample preparation, and the presence of defects can significantly influence the outcome of a pendulum test, and these variables are carefully controlled during standardized testing.
