Peltisikäisön

Peltisikäisön is a Finnish term referring to a small, fast-moving insect commonly known in English as the bristletail or silverfish. These primitive, wingless insects belong to the order Thysanura. They are characterized by their elongated, segmented bodies, typically covered in fine scales, and three long, bristle-like appendages at the rear of the abdomen.

Bristletails are nocturnal and prefer humid, dark environments. They are commonly found in homes, particularly in kitchens, bathrooms, basements, and attics, where they feed on starchy materials such as wallpaper paste, book bindings, glue, and even textiles. Their diet is not limited to these items; they can also consume dead insects and organic debris.

While generally considered a nuisance due to their potential to damage household items and paper products, bristletails are not known to transmit diseases or cause significant harm to humans. Their presence can, however, indicate excessive moisture or hidden food sources that may attract other pests. Control measures typically involve reducing humidity, sealing entry points, and removing food sources. In cases of severe infestation, specific insecticides may be used. The scientific classification of peltisikäisön places them among the earliest diverging insect lineages, offering insights into insect evolution.
