Pellavaöljytuotteet refer to a range of products derived from flaxseed oil, which is extracted from the seeds of the flax plant (Linum usitatissimum). The oil is known for its high content of omega-3 fatty acids, particularly alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), as well as omega-6 fatty acids.

In the culinary world, refined flaxseed oil is used as a dietary supplement due to its nutritional benefits. It is often added to foods like yogurt, smoothies, and salads to increase their omega-3 content. Due to its low smoke point, unrefined flaxseed oil is generally not used for cooking at high temperatures.

Beyond its nutritional applications, flaxseed oil has significant uses in various industries. It is a key component in the production of oil paints and varnishes due to its drying properties. When exposed to air, the unsaturated fatty acids in flaxseed oil undergo polymerization, forming a hard, durable film. This makes it valuable for wood finishing and artistic mediums. Flaxseed oil is also used in the manufacturing of linoleum and certain types of inks. Historically, it has been employed in traditional medicine and for waterproofing textiles. The by-products of flaxseed processing, such as flaxseed meal, are also utilized, primarily as animal feed.
