Patronidentitet

Patronidentitet describes the social identity and self-understanding that develop among actors in a patronage relationship. A patron provides material or symbolic resources—such as money, jobs, protection, or access to networks—in exchange for loyalty, support, or compliance. The term is used across disciplines, including sociology, political science, anthropology, and cultural studies, to analyze how individuals and groups situate themselves within hierarchies of obligation.

Patronidentitet appears in many contexts: in politics as clientelism, where voters or local communities receive resources in return for political support; in arts and culture as sponsorship that can align institutions with a donor's agenda; and in social welfare or religious communities where benefactors confer status and protection. The formation of patronidentitet involves reciprocity, prestige, and group affiliation. It can strengthen solidarity and social capital within a patronic network, but it can also curtail autonomy and reproduce unequal power relations, dependence, or corruption if transparency is lacking.

Researchers study patronidentitet through methods such as interviews, ethnography, discourse analysis, and social network analysis to understand how identities are constructed and maintained within patronage systems.
