The term is a neologism from the combination of past and endure, with the plural suffix -es. It is used to discuss phenomena beyond memory as simple recall, emphasizing active maintenance through ritual, commemoration, education, and public discourse.

Core features include regular memory work (anniversaries, curricula, oral histories), material traces (monuments, archives), and narrative frameworks that re-contextualize past events for present concerns. Pastendures are not static; they are renegotiated as communities reinterpret what is remembered and what is forgotten.

In practice, pastendures appear in national holidays, museum exhibits, local memorials, and digital memorials that invite participation.
