Passivkonstruksjon

Passivkonstruksjon refers to a grammatical construction where the subject of the sentence receives the action of the verb, rather than performing it. This is often achieved by using a form of the verb "to be" followed by the past participle of the main verb. For example, in the sentence "The ball was thrown by the boy," the subject "the ball" is acted upon, not acting. The agent performing the action, "the boy," is introduced by the preposition "by," though it can also be omitted.

The passive voice is distinct from the active voice, where the subject performs the action. In the active voice, the sentence would be "The boy threw the ball." The choice between active and passive voice often depends on emphasis or the desire to de-emphasize the doer of the action. For instance, if the focus is on the object and what happened to it, the passive voice is useful. It can also be employed when the agent is unknown, unimportant, or obvious from the context.

In Norwegian, the passive voice is commonly formed by adding the suffix "-s" to the verb, in addition to the "bli" + past participle construction. For example, "Boken leses" (The book is read) or "Boken blir lest" (The book is being read). The "-s" passive is generally used for habitual or ongoing actions, while the "bli" passive often refers to a specific event or change of state.
