Passiveringsmedel are chemical substances used to treat metal surfaces, particularly stainless steel, to enhance their corrosion resistance. This process, known as passivation, involves the formation of a thin, inert, and protective oxide layer on the metal's surface. This layer acts as a barrier, preventing direct contact between the metal and corrosive agents in the environment.

The most common passivating agent for stainless steel is nitric acid. Citric acid is also frequently used as a more environmentally friendly alternative. During the passivation process, the metal is immersed in a bath containing the passivating agent for a specific period. The acid reacts with the surface, removing free iron and other impurities that could initiate corrosion. It then promotes the formation of a chromium-rich oxide layer, which is inherently passive.
