Partitive-genitive-like constructions are cross-linguistic patterns in which a noun phrase expresses a part of a larger whole by using a genitive-style marker, case, or construction rather than a simple nominative or accusative object. The central semantic aim is to encode partial quantity, an indefinite portion, or a subset of a larger total. The phenomenon is discussed in typology and descriptive linguistics under labels such as partitive marking, genitive of quantity, or part-whole constructions, and it covers a range of formal realizations across languages.

Morphological and syntactic strategies vary. In some languages, a dedicated partitive case marks indefiniteness of quantity, especially with mass nouns or numerals. In others, the genitive case after numerals or certain determiners expresses a part-whole reading. Some languages use prepositional or clausal means to signal parthood, or pair a noun meaning “part” with a genitive NP (for example, a phrase meaning “part of X”). The effect is similar: the noun phrase denotes not all of the referent, but only a portion or a subset.

Representative examples include: Finnish, where the partitive case marks partial quantity with mass and some count nouns; Russian and Polish, where genitive forms after numerals or indefinite quantifiers convey a partitive meaning (for instance, many or some bread). German employs a noun meaning “part” together with a genitive phrase to specify a portion (Teil des Kaffees). Swedish and related languages may use constructions like “a part of” with a determiner or preposition to achieve a similar reading. Estonian and other Baltic languages likewise mix case and syntax to express partiality.
